P-005587-16
Question for written answer P-005587-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Péter Niedermüller (S&D)

Subject:  Legal consequences of referendum in October 2016 in Hungary
 Answer in writing

A government-initiated referendum will be held in Hungary on 2 October 2016.

The question of the so-called ‘quota referendum’ will be: ‘Do you want to allow the European Union to mandate the resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without the approval of the National Assembly’?

The Commission is asked to answer the following:
1. Could this referendum be interpreted as legally binding for the EU institutions?
2. Could any result of this referendum affect the obligations of Hungary based on the Treaties or legitimate decisions of the Council, the Commission and Parliament?
