Question for written answer P-007681-16
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Janusz Lewandowski (PPE) , Markus Pieper (PPE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Euronews Persian television
 Answer in writing

The Euronews Persian service was launched in October 2010 with the aim of creating a communication channel between Europe and Iran. Today Euronews Persian television seems to be the most trusted source of information not only for a large population in Iran, but also for large audiences in Afghanistan.

Euronews Persian represents Europe and European values such as democracy and human rights. The recent gradual removal of international sanctions following the nuclear deal between Iran and the EU 3+3 opens a new chapter in relations between Iran and the EU, and civil society and companies are keen to gain a better understanding of Europe. Euronews Persian television is the most trusted source for such insight.

I was informed that in the upcoming months this important communication channel between the EU and the Persian-speaking population will turn into a digital-only medium, which may be subject to censorship. What is more, in both countries the lack of necessary infrastructure makes Internet access difficult or even impossible in rural areas.

In light of the above, is the Commission convinced that the complete removal of an entire platform (television) will bring a positive effect? What is the justification for this decision?
