P-007557-17
Question for written answer P-007557-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Fernando Ruas (PPE)

 Subject:  Visit by Commissioner Crețu
 Answer in writing

The terrible fires in Portugal this year have ravaged a significant area of the country.

With more than 563 000 hectares burned so far — 6.74 times more than the average over the last 9 years — and more than 100 dead and 250 injured, 2017 has been a tragic year for Portugal.

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Crețu, took advantage of her recent visit to Portugal on 4 December to visit three municipalities affected by the fires, and we welcome this initiative.

However, since she visited only a tiny part of the territory affected by this terrible disaster, will the Commission say:

What was the main criterion in drawing up the programme for her visit?

Is any other visit to the area in question planned in the immediate future covering a broader range of municipalities in order better to reflect the scale of this terrible disaster?
