Parliamentary questions
26 April 2018
Answer given by Ms Creţu on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: P-001804/2018

Regarding the programming period 2014-2020, the regional plan for Attica envisages, inter alia, additional waste treatment and landfill capacity. However, there are no locations for the infrastructures indicated in the plan.

In line with the principle of shared management, assistance is provided under the European Structural and Investment Funds according to an approach of complementarity and partnership between the Commission and the Member States. Consequently, the selection of projects falls under the remit of national management authorities provided their choices are in line with the principles laid down in the programming documents and comply with current national and EU legislation. Therefore, the assessment of proposals and selection of projects is carried out by the competent managing authorities; unless it concerns major projects in the sense of Article 100 of the Common Provisions Regulation as these have to be approved by the Commission. So far however, Commission services have not been informed of any major project related to solid waste management in Attica under the programming period 2014‐2020.

The Commission services are not aware of any study carried out by the region of Attica regarding the economic viability of any waste management project in Marathon-Grammatiko.
