Subject:  Closure of the Vestas plant in León, Spain — sanctions
 Answer in writing

On 27 August 2018, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas announced the closure of its plant in Villadangos del Páramo (León, Spain). This unexpected announcement means the direct loss of 362 jobs and indirectly threatens almost 2 000 other jobs. This closure will be a major blow to the economy of a town that depends on this plant for most of its jobs and that is particularly affected by an ageing and diminishing population. It is worth pointing out that Vestas has received significant public support at regional, national and European levels. Thus, the decision to close the Villadangos del Páramo plant and relocate production outside the EU effectively constitutes a fraudulent use of the EU funds the company has received.

1. Does the Commission plan to initiate proceedings?

2. What sanctions does the Commission plan to impose on Vestas for causing this situation?
