Question for written answer P-004750-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Beatriz Becerra Basterrechea (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Relationship between the EU and the Organisation of American States (OAS) in the management of the humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela
 Answer in writing

During his visit this week to the Colombian-Venezuelan border, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, urged the international community to avoid a major humanitarian catastrophe in Venezuela and to put an end to the violence and repression of the Venezuelan government within the framework of the Inter-American system of law.

Last June, several Members of the European Parliament took part in the mission to the Colombian border with Venezuela and reached the same conclusions as Mr Almagro.

The European Parliament resolution on the elections in Venezuela, adopted by a large majority at the May plenary session, urged the EU to act in a united and coordinated manner with the OAS and the ‘Lima Group’ in managing this crisis. The last meeting held by the High Representative with the Secretary-General of the OAS dates from February 2016.

Given the above, will the VP/HR state:
1. Does she share Mr Almagro’s concern about the alarming situation of the Venezuelan refugees?
2. What coordinated actions has she developed with the ‘Lima Group’ and the OAS in relation to Venezuela?
3. Does she plan to meet the Secretary-General of the OAS to address the humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela in compliance with the European Parliament resolutions?
