29 January 2019
P-000475-19
Question for written answer P-000475-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Neoklis Sylikiotis (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VP/HR — Provocative actions by Turkey in Cyprus' EEZ
 Answer in writing

On 28 January 2019 the Turkish research vessel BARBAROS, accompanied by the support vessel TANUX-1, began to conduct research within block 9 of Cyprus’ EEZ. The fact that the BARBAROS is doing so within Cyprus’ EEZ, in a maritime block awarded to a foreign company in the framework of the Cyprus energy programme licensing procedures, a few nautical miles from Limassol, constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

Will the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy say:

Will she condemn these provocative and illegal acts by Turkey, especially since all efforts should now be focused on resuming the negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem?
