Question for written answer P-000695-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi (PPE)

Subject:  Overcrowding of foreigners in Samos
 Answer in writing

The rage of local society in Samos has caused the unbearable situation prevailing on the island due to the overpopulation of refugees and immigrants. The inhabitants of the island are talking about committing a humanitarian crime, as on the island today there are about 5 000 foreigners in structures with a capacity of 700 people. Living conditions are inhuman, and due to the fact that illegal immigrants stay on the island for many months, there is an increase in delinquency.

In this climate, the limits of the inhabitants of Samos, experiencing unprecedented social situations, are tested daily. Local actors call for the immediate decongestion of the island, the staffing of the asylum service and the provision of healthcare, otherwise they call for the immediate closure of the hospitality center. It is worth mentioning that 60 to 70 people arrive on the island daily, with few returning to their homelands.

Given that the Commission has repeatedly called on the Greek authorities to step up their efforts to improve the situation on the ground, inter alia by making effective use of the funds already available under national programs, can the Commission say:
1. How does it work with the Greek authorities to manage the problem with a view to the immediate decongestion of the island?
2. Where does it identify the major shortcomings and responsibilities of the Greek Government for the situation in the Reception and Identification Center in Samos?
