Financing the fight against smog in Mazowieckie Province

Question for written answer P-001626-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Dariusz Rosati (PPE)

Smog is a serious problem for many European cities, and its effects have a negative, long-term impact on the health of their inhabitants.

Agglomerations in Mazowieckie Province such as Mińsk Mazowiecki and Radom often have high rates of air pollution, but their limited budgets do not allow them to tackle this damaging phenomenon effectively and independently. This means that European funding for eliminating low-carbon pollution sources is essential.

The integrated LIFE project ‘Małopolskie in a healthy atmosphere’, which had an initial budget of some EUR 16 million and leveraged over EUR 800 million, enabled the region’s air quality plan to be implemented and led to an improvement in the quality of life for around 20 million people in Małopolskie and Śląskie as well as in neighbouring countries.

However, the solution to the problem of smog in other regions of Poland, including Mazowieckie, requires those regions also to be covered and further funding to be made available in the coming decade — up to tens of millions of złoty.

I would therefore like to ask what specific action the Commission will take to support cities in Mazowieckie in the fight against smog and in order to find the necessary funding.

Is there any possibility that a project like LIFE will be implemented in Mazowieckie?

How much funding might the population of the province expect to receive?
