P-002154-19
Question for written answer P-002154-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nils Torvalds (Renew)

Subject:  EMFF projects relating to seals in Finland

The Finnish authorities have chosen to discontinue two seal projects financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (Finnish titles of the projects: ‘Harmaahylkeen metsästyksen tehostaminen Saaristomerellä’ and ‘Hyljevapaa kalastus’). In view of the problems caused by excessive seal stocks for professional fishermen and the well-being of fish stocks, this is particularly worrying.

1. Has the Commission instructed the Finnish authorities to discontinue the projects?

2. Does the Commission believe that similar projects would not be legal?

3. Does the Commission consider it appropriate that projects that have been approved and initiated should be discontinued in midstream?
