P-002656-19
Question for written answer P-002656-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Miriam Dalli (S&D)

 Subject:  Operation Sophia

Media reports have revealed that Operation Sophia is not prepared for the possibility of more than 300 000 people fleeing Libya if the situation in the country continues to deteriorate.

The operation’s mandate has been extended, once again, until 30 September 2019, but is limited to strengthening air surveillance and reinforcing support to the Libyan Coastguard and Navy to help them carry out their law enforcement tasks at sea.

1. What are the Commission’s plans for Operation Sophia now that we are just a few weeks away from the end of its mandate?

2. Given that smuggling continued throughout the summer of 2019, what is its view of Operation Sofia’s role?

3. What suggestions or proposals have been put forward for the Member States’ consideration?
