Question for written answer P-003079-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Stelios Kympouropoulos (PPE)

Subject:  Urgent situation of the regional and local authorities in the North and South Aegean

On Sunday 29 September 2019, a significant fire broke out at the Moria Refugee Reception Centre and claimed the lives of a woman from Afghanistan, and possibly also her baby. The situation on these small, remote Greek islands is a desperate one, and they are unable to cope with the huge numbers of refugees and migrants arriving every day. According to the UNHCR, some 24 000 refugees and migrants had reached the Aegean islands by the end of August. Europe must give direct support to the areas that are migrants’ point of first entry, and to those that are involved in reception and integration.

I would therefore like to ask the Commission:
1. Is it planning to send the local and regional authorities emergency funding to help them cope financially with the growing influx of migrants?
2. When is it planning to publish a report on indicators for the effectiveness of the measures taken and the extent to which they are being put into practice, as mentioned in the European Migration Network’s Annual Report on European Migration and Asylum 2018?
3. Is there a strategy for financially supporting, through the 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy, the regions/municipalities that are migrants’ points of first entry, and those that welcome/integrate them?
