Question for written answer P-003103-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sandra Pereira (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Impact of Hurricane Lorenzo on the Azores
 Answer in writing

Hurricane Lorenzo recently passed through the Azores, leaving in its wake a trail of destruction that has yet to be fully quantified. The eastern (Flores and Corvo) and central (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa) islands bore the brunt of damage. More than 50 people were forced from their homes. There was also wide-ranging damage to infrastructure, including the destruction of telecommunications and lighting equipment.

The commercial port on the Island of Flores was destroyed, jeopardising the supply of fuel and food to Flores and Corvo. The vessel connecting Flores and Corvo (‘Ariel’) was also damaged.

Prompt assistance is needed for those affected, particularly those left homeless, and the damaged infrastructure will need to be rebuilt. This will require several million euros.

Could the Commission say what EU programmes and measures can be activated to support these aid efforts and help with the necessary investments? Could the Commission also provide information on the conditions for mobilising the aforementioned support?
