Question for written answer P-003528-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Nils Torvalds (Renew)

Subject:  New European Data Protection Supervisor

The European Data Protection Supervisor plays an important role in monitoring EU rules on the processing of personal data and ensuring they are applied. The protection of personal data is essentially about protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

The mandate of the acting Data Protection Supervisor expires on 5 December 2019. If no one new is appointed before then, there is a risk that we will temporarily be without a Data Protection Supervisor.

1. Does the Commission agree that it is important for a new Data Protection Supervisor to take office before 5 December 2019?

2. When will the Commission come up with a list of candidates — as it is required to do under Regulation (EU) No 2018/1725 — so that Parliament and the Council can take a decision?
