Question for written answer P-003590-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Antonio Tajani (PPE)

Subject:  Reducing environmental pollution in highly industrialised regions

President-elect Von der Leyen has made a European Green deal one of her objectives.

I refer to Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe, and to the European Parliament resolution of 13 March 2019 on a Europe that protects clean air for all, calling on the Commission and Member States to provide local authorities with sufficient tools to combat air pollution and pointing to the need to help regions affected by the energy transition.

Air pollution in the Terni basin is caused by various interactions between different sources — traffic, heating, industrial installations and geomorphological characteristics — and this interaction leads to persistent exceedances of the PM2.5 and PM10 limits in the air.

How will the Commission financially help highly industrialised regions of Italy, such as the Terni basin, to reduce environmental pollution and to promote an industrial and energy transition leading to growth and employment?

Will the Commission submit a financing plan to this end in its first 100 days?
