Priority question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Pascal Arimont
Subject: Situation in the Moria refugee camp on Lesvos

In its answer to question E-000057/2018, the Commission stated in relation to the situation in the Moria refugee camp that it had ‘made available the necessary funding to improve living conditions in hotspot of Moria and other refugee locations in Lesvos, including supporting the winterisation and upgrade or extension of current capacity’. The Commission was ‘in close contact with the Greek authorities specifically for the most vulnerable, to ensure that they receive appropriate shelter’.

It appears that these steps were far from sufficient because capacity has been severely exceeded, resulting in catastrophic living conditions on the ground: the camp which was intended for approximately 3 000 people, now houses up to 13 000 people. The conditions are said to be hellish(1). The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has also called for urgent action(2).

What steps is the Commission taking to provide concrete assistance to people on the ground, including in light of the approaching winter?

Is there a plan to equip the camp with sufficient staff (doctors, nurses, etc.) and facilities (housing, toilets, showers, etc.) to provide decent living conditions and to ensure adequate hygiene and support for minors?

What measures are being taken in relation to the Greek authorities which are not able to get to grips with the situation regarding the respect for human rights on the island?
