The Socialists emerge as the largest party with 22 seats, although this, in effect, is less than the combined number of seats secured in 1994 when the party put forward a joint list with the now defunct Radicals, headed by Mr Tapie. The split in the Centre-Right parties saw a fall in their combined number of seats from 28 to 21 as the "National Independence from Europe" party increases its share of the vote and maintains its 13 seats. A split in the National Front Movement also saw their number of seats halved to 5 as other smaller left wing parties gain seats. The Greens win 9 seats and the Pro-Hunting and Traditional Sports ad hoc group doubles its vote to secure 6 seats. Like many other countries, the turnout is down on 1994.
