The GUE/NGL is made up of 52 MEPs from across Europe working for peace, solidarity, social justice, equality, democracy and human rights. It is the only gender balanced group in Parliament, with 26 women and 26 men. We are a confederal group which means respecting the diversity of identities and opinions of our MEPs. During this term, we will oppose austerity, push for sustainable economic development, seek to tackle the dangerous rise of the far right and counter the EU-US TTIP trade talks.
Gabi Zimmer was elected president of the group in 2012 and re-elected after the 2014 elections. She has been an MEP since 2004. Between 2000 and 2003 she was president of the German left party PDS (which merged to become DIE.LINKE in 2007). Before that she was president of "PDS Thüringen" from 1990 until 1998 and a Member of the Regional Parliament of Thuringia. Her main political objectives are the fight against hunger, poverty, and social exclusion both within and outside the EU.
