Jerzy Buzek on the earthquake in the Northwest region of China

The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, sends his condolences and his solidarity to the families of the victims of the terrible earthquake that hit the Qinghai province of China.

The earthquake hit Yushu county in the North-western region of China in the hours of the early morning. Hundreds lost their lives and thousands are missing and injured, most buildings of the cities of Jiegu and Yushu are reported to be destroyed.

EP President Jerzy Buzek said: "I have just been informed about the tragic event that has hit Yushu county in Qinghai province. In this moment of deep national sorrow for my own home country, I would like to send my condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives in this natural disaster.

I want to express on behalf of the European Parliament my hope that rescue efforts will succeed in limiting the death toll of this disaster and that those injured will manage to recover soon and fully. I hope that essential services as well as reconstruction can start as soon as possible in the region. We offer our support to the Chinese authorities and people and thank all the rescue teams for their efforts."
