Buzek meets with Norwegian Speaker of Parliament and Norwegian Parliament Committee Chairs

Brussels -
Wednesday, November 10, 2010

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek held a meeting this morning with Dag Terje Andersen, the President of the Norwegian Parliament - Stortinget - and a large delegation of Committee Chairmen of the Norwegian Parliament in the European Parliament in Brussels.

President Buzek underlined:

"We are establishing much stronger links between Committees and Chairmen of both Parliaments. In particular, I strongly welcome the opening today of Norwegian Parliament's liaison office to the European Parliament - this will facilitate the bilateral contacts even further.  We have excellent relations with Norway - Norway being part of the European Economic Area and an associate member of the Schengen zone."

The main topics of discussion focussed on Arctic policy, relations with Russia, co-operation on the level of parliaments and energy security and climate change polices.

For the Arctic region, the discussion focussed on the sustainable exploitation of the natural resources, protection and preservation of environment and the multilateral governance.

The discussion also touched on Norway's relative long experience in using Carbon Capture and Storage technology, in addition to 90 percent of Norwegian electricity being produced by hydropower and how the EU could learn from the Norwegian experience in this area.
