EP President Jerzy Buzek made the following statement on the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of World War II on 1 September 1939.

"The attack on Poland which took place on 1 September 1939 marked the beginning of the nightmare which engulfed Europe and the world. We shall not forget. And we must not allow ourselves to forget.

Over the many years since the first European Community was established, we have been knocking down the walls left behind by the Second World War. We cannot now allow them ever to be raised again. We have a duty to ensure that our nations are truly reconciled. Peace and freedom must be built everyday."
