Nicole Fontaine on official visit to Burkina Faso, 8 to 11 January 2001, to mark the 7th anniversary of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU)

From 8 to 11 January the President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine, will visit Burkino Faso to mark the 7th anniversary of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
During her visit, the President intends to encourage African regional integration and to pay tribute to
the WAEMU's work in this area. The EU attaches particular significance to regional economic partnerships, which play a major role in EU-ACP relations. In her talks with representatives of the WAEMU and Burkina Faso, the President will also focus on the democratic aspect of these regional groupings and their member states. Nicole Fontaine also wishes to discuss measures to combat the AIDS epidemic, and what contribution the EU can make.
Programme
Tuesday, 9 January 2001: WAEMU Commission Headquarters
Tuesday begins with an interview with the President of the WAEMU Commission, Mr Moussa Touré, followed by a working meeting with the members of the various WAEMU bodies (Commission, Court of Justice, Court of Auditors, Interparliamentary Committee, Regional Consular Chamber, West African Central Bank, West African Development Bank).
The afternoon will be devoted to meetings with the Prime Minister, Mr Paramanga Ernest Yonli, the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Moussa Sanogo, the President of the National Assembly and President of Parliament, Mr Maurice Traoré and the Foreign Affairs Minister and Minister of State, Mr Youssouf Ouedraogo.
In the late afternoon, Mrs Fontaine will have an audience with the President of Burkina Faso, Mr Blaise Compaoré, and address the National Assembly.
Wednesday, 10 January 2001: WAEMU Commission Headquarters
Official commemoration of the 7th anniversary of the WAEMU,
10 January 1994 - 10 January 2001
The official celebration will begin at 10.30 a.m., with speeches by the WAEMU Commission President and Nicole Fontaine.
During the afternoon, Mrs Fontaine will visit the World Bank and the IMF, and the Association of Elected Women Representatives and the Children's Parliament of Burkina Faso.
Mrs Fontaine and the WAEMU Commission President will hold a joint press conference at the WAEMU headquarters at 5.30 p.m.
