Following the resignation of Ms Anna Diamantopoulou from the position of Member of the European Commission, Mr Stavros Dimas has been nominated Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs.

In order to enhance the transparency of the nomination and to give the appointment of the new Commissioner added legitimacy, the European Parliament will conduct a hearing with the Commissioner.

The hearing, which is the responsibility of the European Parliament's Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, will take place in Strasbourg on 30 March 2004. The Members of the European Parliament will have the opportunity to attest the Commissioner's qualifications for high office. In the organisation of the hearing, the Commissioner has been asked to reply to a written questionnaire.

The Chairman of the Committee will inform the President of the European Parliament of the outcome of the hearing.
