Hearing of the Commissioner designate from Cyprus

Following his nomination as Foreign Minister of Cyprus, Mr Markos Kyprianou submitted his resignation as member of the European Commission responsible for Health on 28 February 2008.

The Cypriot government notified its intention to designate Mrs Androula Vassiliou as new Commissioner. On 29 February 2008, the Council of the European Union decided by written procedure to appoint Mrs Vassiliou member of the European Commission from 3 March 2008 to the end of the current Commission's term of office, on 31 October 2009.

The President of the European Commission expressed his agreement to this designation and his wish to assign the "Health" portfolio to Mrs Vassiliou.

In accordance with the Framework Agreement on relations between the European Parliament and the Commission, it was agreed that the Mrs Vassiliou would appear before Parliament without delay and in full compliance with the prerogatives of the Institutions.

Consistent with its will to enhance the transparency of the nominations and to give the appointments of the new Commissioners more legitimacy, the European Parliament will conduct a hearing with Mrs Vassiliou on 1 April 2008. To prepare the hearing, Mrs Vassiliou is requested to reply to a written questionnaire. Based on the outcome of the hearing the European Parliament will proceed to a formal vote in plenary.
