50th anniversary of Ireland's application to join the European Community

21-07-2011

To mark the 50th anniversary of Ireland's application to join the European Community, the European Parliament Office in Ireland, in association with European Movement Ireland, will host a special event with Dr TK Whitaker and Professor Brigid Laffan.

Dr Whitaker worked closely on preparing Ireland's application for membership with the then Taoiseach, Sean Lemass.  The process culminated on 31 July 1961 with Ireland's formal letter of application being delivered to Dr Ludwig Erhard, the chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, who held the presidency of the Council at that time.

Dr Whitaker will share his memories of the events leading up to the application and Professor Laffan will mark the event with an address.
