7 September 2007: EP Regional Development Committee to visit Ireland
A delegation from the European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development, led by Spanish MEP Gerardo Galeote, will travel to Ireland and Northern Ireland on Monday and Tuesday of next week to examine the impact of EU funding for regional development. The emphasis during this visit will be on cross-border cooperation and on the future of these regions under the new EU funding period 2007-2013. During the visit, the delegation will meet with political leaders on both sides of the border including Mr Dick Roche TD, Minister of State for European Affairs, Dr Ian Paisley, First Minister of Northern Ireland and Martin McGuinness, Deputy First Minister.
Monday, 10 September
Following a breakfast meeting with the First and Deputy First Ministers of Northern Ireland, the delegation will hold a meeting with the North-South Ministerial Council. This will be followed by a meeting with representatives of the Special EU Programmes Body and of the International Fund for Ireland and by a separate meeting with partnership bodies. The morning will conclude with a short Press Conference.
On Monday afternoon, the delegation will travel to Lifford in Donegal, where they will meet with EU-funded youth groups in the area and with groups from the Gaeltacht working on cross-border projects. These meetings will take place in Donegal County Council.
A working dinner that evening will be hosted by the local councils of Donegal, Derry and Strabane.
Tuesday, 11 September
On Tuesday morning, the delegation will participate in a working breakfast with local chambers of commerce in Donegal and will pay onsite visits to EU-funded cross-border projects in the area. They will then travel to Sligo, where they will participate in a meeting and working lunch hosted by Mr Gerry Finn, the Director of the BMW Regional Assembly and Ms Gillian Buckley, CEO of the Western Development Commission.
A meeting and working dinner will be hosted that evening in Dublin by Mr Dick Roche TD, Minister of State for European Affairs.
