Altiero Spinelli - a commemoration: Monday, 10 May

On Monday, 10 May, the Ambassador of Italy to Ireland, H.E. Valerio Augusto Astraldi, former MEP and President of the Institute of International and European Affairs, Brendan Halligan and Head of the European Parliament Office in Ireland, Francis Jacobs will speak during a special commemorative event to honour Altiero Spinelli's contribution to European integration.

Mr Spinelli, who was jailed for his opposition to fascism, served both as a European Commissioner and as an MEP. He wrote 'Towards a Free and United Europe', which became a powerful inspiration to those promoting European integration. His report for the European Parliament on a draft Treaty Establishing the EU is now regarded as a visionary project, and many of its proposals have been adopted in subsequent EU Treaties.
