On 11 April, the European Parliament Office in Ireland hosted a briefing by Richard Ashworth, MEP on the Budget of the European Union in 2018 and Beyond. Mairead McGuinness MEP, First Vice-President of the European Parliament also addressed the meeting.

Richard Ashworth is a long-standing Member of the Budgets Committee of the European Parliament.  He outlined the Parliament's approach to the 2018 Budget and identified the main political hurdles to be overcome before its adoption in the autumn. Looking ahead, he offered some thoughts on the challenges that the UK's departure from the EU will pose to the EU budget and how the EU might address questions on both the revenue and expenditure side of the budget beyond 2020.
