EU Communication Challenge Workshop for Media Students
The EU Communication Challenge will take place on Friday 27th of April 2012 in the European Parliament office in Dublin.
This is a unique opportunity for students to gain an insight into the challenges of communicating current EU-related issues to the public in the presence of guests who deal with this challenge on a daily basis. Entitled 'The EU Communication Challenge', this event is organised in cooperation with the EC Representation in Ireland and is the office's fourth attempt at this experiment. Participants will hear from Phil Prendergast, MEP, Paddy Smyth, Irish Times, Sarah Collins, Brussels-based free lance journalist (Irish Independent, Europolitique) and Dr. Ben Tonra, UCD, all providing their views on the challenge of communicating the EU. Participants then have to choose a working group based on the information supplied (contextualising each issue), the 'rules of the game' are distributed and the groups are invited to record a 2-3 minute audio interview package - they are given one hour to assign roles, prepare the interview and record it 'live'. Immediately after the working groups, we bring in some journalists to listen to a rapporteur from each group describing their experiences and to listen to the final audio clip each group has produced. A discussion will follow, during which the journalists give some practical comments and advice to the students.
