Europe Day/Week 2013

Come and celebrate Europe Day 2013 on 9 May from 12.00 noon in European Union House, 18 Dawson Street/43 Molesworth Street, Dublin.  Sample the national foods of EU Member States while being entertained by the Dublin Gospel Choir!

The European Parliament Information Office in Ireland and the European Commission Representation in Ireland in co-operation with several embassies of EU Member States is marking Europe Day with “A Taste of Europe”.  The event will be opened by Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton T.D. together with European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and MEP Emer Costello.

This will also be a chance to see the EU&Ireland@40 exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the accession of Ireland to the EU. The exhibition represents an invaluable opportunity to review Ireland's journey through the past 40 years of EU membership, a period of time during which the country was transformed politically, economically, socially and qualitatively.

22 panels will lead visitors through the different stages of the relationship  between Ireland and the EU: from the knocking on the door and the following accession, to the last years of crisis and recovery; passing through, amongst the others, the economic development (with the major role played by Common Agricultural Policy and Structural Funds), six previous Irish presidencies, nine Commissioners and two Secretaries-General, the introduction of the Single Market and the Euro, the enlargement and several referendums.

European Handshake

The European Union started with a handshake between two former enemies who never dreamed that their gesture would lead to 27 countries becoming partners and being presented with the Nobel Peace prize in 2012. To mark Europe Day/Week, several members of the European Parliament went to visit schools in their constituency to invite students to shake hands with their school friends  - especially those whose families have come from other countries.
