LUX Film Prize finalist "As I Open My Eyes" and Lux film prize nominee "Suntan" are being screened at the 2016 Cork Film Festival (11-20 November 2016).   They will be screened on 15 and 16 November respectively at Triskel Christchurch, Cork City.

The European Parliament is delighted to be teaming up with Triskel Christchurch, Cork for the free screening of the 2015 LUX Film Prize winner Mustang by Deniz Gamze Erguven. The film is being show simultaneously across Europe in cinemas of the Europa Cinemas network and will be followed by a streamed Q&A and a Twitter wall allowing audiences from across Europe to interact directly with the film director. Tickets are available from 5pm on the day.

Human rights students from UCD, TCD, UCC and NUIG are participating in events this month to publicise the 2016 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and to promote debate on the individual human rights issues to which the prize relates.

The European Parliament Information Office in Ireland is partnering this year's Merriman Summer School which has as its theme "Gallant Allies in Europe", taken from the Easter Proclamation. Speakers, including current and former MEPs, TDs, artists, authors, youth leaders, journalists and noted academics, will endeavour to place the Easter Rising in its international context and consider Ireland's relationship with the United Kingdom and the EU 100 years on from 1916.

The European Parliament Information Office in Ireland and the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) are jointly hosting a seminar on the upcoming referendum in Britain with regard to membership of the EU. Ireland is well represented at the EYE 2016 taking place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this weekend with participants from the Meath Youth Forum, Foroige, Macra na Feirme, The Galway European Youth Capital and Galway 2020 Capital of Culture. The NYCI are also there with a group of 30 young people and youth workers/leaders from Youth Work Ireland Galway, YMCA Cork, FDYS Wexford, Eco-Unesco, Crosscare, Ronanstown Youth Service, and youth work students from Maynooth. On Friday 6 May, the European Parliament will celebrate Europe Day for the first time in Cork with an open invitation to meet with MEPs of the South Constituency. Seán Kelly, Deirdre Clune and Liadh Ní Riada will be available to meet with all attending the event which takes place at Cork City Hall from 12h00- 14h00. Try some European fare which will be provided by a number of EU embassies and pick up some information about other European countries. Shay Byrne, host of RTE’s “Rising Time” will be compere for the day.

On Friday 22 April, MEPs Mairead McGuinness and Mary Honeyball (UK-Labour Party) will host a meeting to discuss the plight of women refugees. Ms Honeyball is the author of the European Parliament’s Report on the situation of women refugees and asylum seekers in the EU. The meeting will host representatives of NGOs that are on the front-line in helping women refugees. The event is organised jointly with the Immigrant Council of Ireland.

Marian Harkin
Marian Harkin MEP and Rapporteur for the Report on the EGF will host a consultation on Friday 1 April with stakeholders from a cross section of Irish society to examine the operation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) 2007-2014 and to look at recommendations to improve it for the future. The event will be held in conjunction with the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland.

To mark this year's International Women's Day, the European Parliament Information Office in Ireland is linking up with the National Women's Council of Ireland to jointly host an event with MEP Lynn Boylan evaluating the outcome of the Irish general election and the extent to which the candidate quota has contributed to the presence of women in the National Parliament. Marian Harkin MEP will host an information seminar in Galway on Friday, 12 February 2016 on issues relating to the delivery and accessibility of health services in the region. The seminar will look at the blend of local initiatives and European policies.
