Patron:  Micheál D. Higgins, President of Ireland

Honorary Director:  Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament

Academic Director:  Dr Bríd Quinn, University of Limerick

The European Parliament Office in Ireland is very pleased this year to co-operate with the Merriman Summer School to include several discussions relating to Ireland's place in Europe from 1916 to 2016. The Merriman School is long known for its engaging debates and discussions as well as numerous cultural and music events. In addition, the Irish language debates figure prominently. We are working with Merriman this year to include a number of discussions in the programme that will involve current and past MEPs (including former President of the European Parliament Pat Cox).  The School begins on Wednesday night with the opening lecture by UCD Historian, Professor Diarmaid Ferriter speaking on "Our Gallant Allies in Europe – A Marriage of Convenience".

MEP Brian Hayes will speak at 8 pm on Thursday night in a session dealing with "Britain and Europe in the aftermath of the UK Referendum".  On Friday morning MEPs Seán Kelly and Liadh Ní Riada will participate in a session on "Cad é sin don té sin: Éire, an Bhreatain, an Eoraip".  On Friday afternoon, at 3 pm, Pat Cox will host a special session on "Generation Maastricht: the Youth Perspective.

A special session of former MEPs, Emer Costello, Nuala Ahern and Seán Ó Neachtain will look at "Our Men and Women in Europe" at 3 pm on Thursday 30th June.
