Irish food supplements petition to be heard in European Parliament

Dr. Robert Verkerk of the Alliance for Natural Health and scientific advisor to the Irish Association of Health Stores (IAHS) will make a presentation to the European Parliament's Petitions Committee (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/activities/committees/homeCom.do?language=EN&body=PETI) at 3pm (2pm Irish time) on Monday, 19 January.

Sponsored by Irish MEP Kathy Sinnott (Independent - South), the IAHS made a submission to the Petitions Committee in Autumn 2007 in relation to the Food Supplements Directive (2002/46/EC).The IAHS contendsthat the proposed reductionof levels of vitamins and minerals permittedon open saleunder this directive will (a) result in the closure of many health stores and the loss of hundreds of jobs in the natural products sector and (b) lead to the unwarranted restriction of consumer choice.

The IAHS' submission was ruled admissible and will now be presented to a full hearing of the committee.
