MEPs to hear new Bulgarian nominee for European Commission on Wednesday

On Wednesday, 3 February, MEPs in the European Parliament's Development Committee will hear from Kristalina Georgieva, the new Bulgarian nominee for the European Commission's Development portfolio.

The hearing will take place between 11.30am and 2.30pm (Irish time) and will be immediately followed by a Press Conference.

The hearing can be followed live on or on EP live.

Between 11-19 January, MEPs heard from the Commissioners-designate, as nominated initially by the EU Member States. Based on the portfolios they were allocated by the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, each of the Commissioners-designate was heard and questioned by MEPs in the relevant European Parliament Committee.

Following Ms Georgieva's hearing, the Development Committee will forward its evaluation to the President of the European Parliament. MEPs are due to vote on the membership of the European Commission (as a whole) on Tuesday, 9 February during the European Parliament's Plenary Session in Strasbourg.

When the original Bulgarian Commissioner-designate, Rumiana Jeleva, announced her resignation on Tuesday, 19 January, Kristalina Georgieva, currently Vice-President of the World Bank, was announced as her replacement. She will appear before the EP's Development Committee in Brussels on Wednesday, 3 February between 11.30am and 2.30pm (Irish time).

Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell is a member of the European Parliament's Development Committee and Labour Party MEP Proinsias De Rossa is a substitute member.
