Sakharov Prize 2015 events, Dublin, Maynooth and Cork
This week, human rights students from UCD, TCD, NUI Maynooth and UCC are participating in events to publicise the 2015 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and to promote debate on the individual human rights issues to which the prize relates. The Sakharov prize is awarded every year to honour exceptional individuals who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression.
As part of the event, students give short presentations on each of the initial list of nominees who were submitted to Parliament on 28 September at a joint meeting of the Foreign Affairs (AFET) and Development (DEVE) committees and the Human Rights (DROI) subcommittee, outlining the human rights issues involved and arguing why the Sakharov Prize should be given to "their" nominee.
At the end of the presentations the students vote on which of the nominees to recommend for the 2015 Sakharov Prize, with the outcome being sent to Irish and other MEPs, notably those in the Human Rights subcommittee.
The actual vote on the three Sakharov Prize finalists will take place in Parliament this Thursday Thursday 15 October in a joint meeting of the AFET/DEVE/DROI committees with the final decision being made by Parliament's Conference of Presidents on 29 October. The ceremony will take place with the 2015 Sakharov Prize Laureate on Wednesday 16 December in Strasbourg.
