Third Age Conference, Croke Park

A hugely successful conference on intergenerational solidarity in Croke Park Conference Centre held on 1st October (International Day of Older Persons) and moderated by Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament, heard contributions from Mairead McGuinness MEP, Marian Harkin MEP, broadcaster Esther Rantzen and European Commissioner for Social Affairs, Laszlo Andor.  The conference was jointly organised by Third Age and the European Parliament Office in Ireland.

The conference heard a call from Mairead McGuinness for a more reasoned debate on all the issues facing Irish society now.  The adversarial tone of public debate today too often distracts from the important messages and issues that need to be resolved.  The conference also heard Marian Harkin MEP call for greater solidarity between people and to move away from the individualism to enable society to tackle the problems that exist today.
