Today's hearings at the European Parliament

Hearings are currently taking place at the European Parliament in Brussels, during which MEPs will decide on the candidates for the new European Commission.

They will first hear from each of the candidates individually, as they appear before the relevant European Parliament Committees (11-19 January). The Committees will then forward their evaluations to the President of the European Parliament. The MEPs must vote to approve the membership of the European Commission as a whole before the new Commissioners can take office.

Today, two Commissioners-designate will appear before MEPs from the relevant Committees.

Commissioner-designate for the Home Affairs portfolio, Cecilia Malström (Sweden) will face questions in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

Commissioner-designate for the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries portfolio, Maria Damanaki (Greece) will face questions in the Fisheries Committee.
