Women in Politics, 16-17 July 2015, Cavan

The European Parliament Information Office is helping to support a summer school of the Cavan Women's Network which will be held on 16 and 17 July 2015 in the Cavan Crystal Hotel, Cavan.  Women in Politics will be a major theme of the summer school and presentations by European Parliament Vice President Mairead McGuinness and MEP Marian Harkin will take place on Friday morning, 17 July. To register for this free event Tel. (01) 6057900 or email: events-epdublin@ep.europa.eu.

Keynote speeches will be given on the development of women's representation in the European Parliament since the direct elections in 1979, the input of women to various committees in Parliament and the role of Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. Both Marian and Mairead are ideally placed to highlight the role that women can play at European level, both being members of the European Parliament since 2004. They have experience of membership of some of the most important committees in Parliament including the committees for Agriculture, Social Affairs, Economic and Monetary Affairs as well as Environment.

With a total of six European election campaigns behind the two MEPs, the conference presents an ideal opportunity to learn of their experiences on the campaign trails and how they interact with their constituents across 15 counties stretching from the Aran Islands to Kildare and to the northernmost tip of Donegal.

In addition, with Mairead McGuinness now Vice-President of the European Parliament, the audience is guaranteed a stimulating outline of how European politics operates at the highest levels.
