Death of former President of the European Parliament

The European Parliament notes with regret the death of the former President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine on 17 May 2018 at 76 years of age.

Ms Nicole Fontaine served as a French Member from 1984 to 2002 and from 2004 to 2009,  She was President of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2002, and Vice-President from 1989 to 1999.

During her time in Parliament, Ms Fontaine was a Member of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats - Member of the Bureau

She was Vice-Chair of the Delegations for relations with the Mashreq countries, Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with Israel and Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan,

Member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of South America and Member of the Delegation for relations with the Gulf States, including Yemen.

She was Member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Citizens’ Rights, Member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, Member of the Committee on Youth, Culture, Education, the Media and Sport, Member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market and Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
