EP President Schulz on the increasing tensions between Israel and the Gaza Strip

"I condemn the escalation of violence between Hamas and Israel. I call on both parts to show  maximum restraint and to avoid any further loss of life.

Commenting on the escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated:

"I condemn the escalation of violence between Hamas and Israel. I call on both parts to show  maximum restraint and to avoid any further loss of life.

Civilians on both sides are paying the highest price in this vicious circle of attacks and retaliations. Hostilities should stop immediately.

The European Union rests committed to a two-state solution with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security. I call on the two sides to refrain from belligerent and counter-productive rhetoric and to go back to the negotiating table.

I extend my condolences to the families of the victims of these attacks, and I wish a speedy and full recovery to the injured."
