Gianni Pittella to be Acting European Parliament President 18 June - 1 July 2014

Martin Schulz has today been elected as Group leader of the Socialists and Democrats and steps down as European Parliament President.  According to the European Parliament Rules of Procedure (Rule 18) Gianni Pittella, First Vice-President takes over as Acting President of the European Parliament until a new President is elected. The election of a new European Parliament President will take place on 1 July 2014 in Strasbourg during the inaugural plenary session.
