MEP Emer Costello to lead European Parliament delegation to West Bank and East Jerusalem
Emer Costello, MEP for Dublin and Chairperson of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Council, will lead a five-member cross-party delegation of the EP to the occupied Palestinian territories (oPT: West Bank and East Jerusalem) from 26 April to 2 May 2013.
STATEMENT BY EMER COSTELLO, Labour MEP for Dublin
"The primary purpose of the visit is to focus on the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, at a major conference on Freedom and Dignity in Ramallah at the weekend. The delegation will meet with elected representatives of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and see first-hand the conditions on the ground of the Palestinian people living in the territories.
“Following this weekend’s conference in Ramallah, the delegation will meet with a variety of NGOs and EU representatives in the region. We will then visit a number of villages in the Jordan Valley whose Palestinian inhabitants suffer the consequences of on-going house demolitions, evictions and harassment. Next we will depart to Jenin in the North of the region to meet community leaders, representatives of the Christian community and visit Jenin Refugee Camp.
“Travelling south to Hebron, we will visit the settlements in the Israeli-controlled H2 area, before continuing to Bethlehem to meet the Mayor. We will conclude the mission by examining the situation in Jerusalem’s surrounding neighbourhood on Wednesday. On our return, I will write a full report on the visit on behalf of the delegation, which will include recommendations and follow-up action.”
The delegation will be composed of DPLC Chairperson Emer Costello (S&D, Ireland), and Members Véronique de Keyser, Vice-President of the S&D Group (Belgium), Nicole Kiil-Nielsen (Greens, France), Alexandra Thein (ALDE, Germany) and Georgios Toussas (GUE, Greece).
