The Week Ahead 18 - 25 March 2013

Committee meetings, Brussels


EU economy/long-term budget.
Economic and social policy will top the agenda of a debate with EP President Schulz, EP political group leaders, European Council President Van Rompuy and European Commission President Barroso, following the 14-15 March EU summit. The EU's long-term budget is also likely to feature, ahead of negotiations between Parliament and Council. (Wednesday)


Eurogroup debate. The economic affairs committee welcomes Jeroen Dijsselbloem for his first debate in Parliament, following his appointment as Eurogroup President in January. (Thursday)


Air transport.
The transport committee will vote on a law to regulate groundhandling in airports (press conference at 10.00), before discussing possible new rules on pilots' working time and proposed changes to air passenger rights. (Tuesday)


Accounts sign-off
. Parliament's budget control committee will decide whether to recommend signing off the accounts for all EU expenditure in 2011, including by EU   institutions and agencies. (Monday-Tuesday)


Audit reform. The legal affairs committee will vote on far-reaching audit reform measures, which aim to tackle issues including conflicts of interest. (Tuesday)


Political parties
. Constitutional affairs MEPs will vote on rules regarding the EU registration and financing of European political parties and foundations. (Tuesday)


Pensions. The employment committee will vote on a resolution calling for sustainable pensions that meet the challenges of an ageing population and constrained public finances. MEPs will also point to coordination needed to ensure member states' varying systems do not deprive cross-border workers of their pension rights. (Thursday)


President's agenda. EP President Martin Schulz will meet Salam Fayyad, PM of the Palestinian National Authority on Monday and attend Pope Francis' inaugural mass in the Vatican City on Tuesday. On Thursday and Friday he will pay an official visit to Switzerland, where he will meet the presidents of the Swiss National Council, Council of States and Swiss Confederation, as well as the Director of the International Labour Organisation.
