This week in the European Parliament (3-9 December)

This week in the European Parliament Committees and Political Groups will hold their meetings.  Read on to find out more on what's happening.

Budget.  Parliament's political groups will continue discussing a "draft package" of proposals outlined in the three-way talks with the Council and the Commission to ascertain whether there are grounds for a possible deal on the payment shortfalls for 2012 and the 2013 budget.

Economic crisis. Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee MEPs will discuss the crisis and long-term EU budget talks under way with French finance minister Pierre Moscovici and German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble (Monday).

Climate. A delegation of 14 MEPs will go to Doha to take part in the UN climate change conference. A joint press conference with the European Commission will be held on Wednesday at 13.00 (Monday to Friday).

Pakistani foreign minister. Foreign minister Hina Rabbanin will discuss recent developments in Pakistan with the Foreign Affairs Committee (Monday).

Egypt. Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs will discuss the situation in Egypt (Monday).

Banking union seminar.
MEPs will participate in a journalists seminar on EU banking union legislation organised by the Parliament Press Service (Wednesday).Provided Council has a mandate trialogues could start Wednesday.

Human rights. The Human Rights Subcommittee will discuss the situation in China after the leadership change and developments in Mali (Thursday).


President's Diary. President Schulz will meet Herman Van Rompuy on Tuesday. On Wednesday he will open the "European Parliament of Persons with Disabilities" conference and hold a debate with former European Commission President Jacques Delors and former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in the context of the European book Prize. On Thursday he will be meet the foreign minister of Algeria, and on  Sunday he will take part in a press conference in Oslo ahead of the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony.


Plenary preparation. Parliament's political groups will prepare for the plenary session in Strasbourg, including discussions on the 2013 EU Budget and banking union.  Also on the agenda are the 2012  Sakharov Prize award ceremony, the unitary patent protection,  the airport package and protection of animals during transport.
