Model Council Winners - Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny
In March 2011 three Loreto students from Loreto Secondary School in Kilkienny travelled to Dublin Castle to participate in a mock European Council debate. The students, Niamh Tuohy, Niamh Dhondt and Clodagh Phelan, represented Sweden in a debate on the extension of maternity leave within the EU. The girls were chosen as the winners out of 28 other schools and won a trip to Euroscola for themselves and twenty-one of their classmates.
"On the day in Strasbourg we were treated to breakfast with our European peers. Shortly afterwards we were taken to the chamber where we were given a brief insight into the European Parliament. One of our students, Niamh Tuohy, then introduced our school and country to the parliament as did representatives of the 26 other member states. Niamh and the English representative were the only people to greet the parliament in a language other than English. These introductions were followed by an insightful question and answer session with members of the parliament. We then ate lunch in the parliament and partook in an activity named Eurogames. In the afternoon we formed discussion groups and later presented our findings to the parliament. Some of the topics of discussion included freedom of information, renewable energies and Europe's future. We were delighted to get the chance to feature prominently in the discussions. After these proposals the finals of the Eurogames took place with one of our students, Meghan O' Keefe, taking first place. A highly enjoyable and unforgettable trip was experienced by us all."
