	Master's degree in Protestant theology (1975). Theologian specialising in the history of religion.
	Member of the national council of the Socialist Party.
	Member of the PSE (since 2008).
	Member of Strasbourg Municipal Council (since 1983). Mayor of Strasbourg and chair of the Strasbourg Urban Community Council (1989-1997 and 2000-2001). Vice chair of the Strasbourg Urban Community Council (since 2008).
	Member of the National Assembly for Bas-Rhin (1986-1988). Reelected to National Assembly without taking her seat (1997).
	State Secretary for the elderly and disabled (1988). Chair of the interdepartmental task force on drug addiction (1988-1989). Minister for Culture and Communications (1997-2000).
	Member of the European Parliament (1989-1997 and since 2004). Head of the French Socialist delegation (since 2009).
