Written explanations of vote

573

Prevention of the use of the financial system for the purposes of money laundering or terrorist financing (A8-0056/2017 - Krišjānis Kariņš, Judith Sargentini)

19-04-2018

. ‒ I voted in favour of the report, which addresses five further tasks: ensuring a high level of safeguards for financial flows from high-risk third countries; enhancing the powers of EU Financial Intelligence Units and facilitating their cooperation; ensuring centralised national bank and payment account registers or central data retrieval systems in all Member States; tackling terrorist financing risks linked to virtual currencies; and tackling risks linked to anonymous pre-paid instruments (e.g. pre-paid cards).

Approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles (A8-0048/2017 - Daniel Dalton)

19-04-2018

. ‒ In response to the Dieselgate scandal, which revealed the serious failure of the current system of approval and motor surveillance of cars, this report calls for tightening up the approval and surveillance of new cars to better protect consumers and the environment, and restore faith in the car industry and the system. That is why I voted in favour of the report

Organic production and labelling of organic products (A8-0311/2015 - Martin Häusling)

19-04-2018

. ‒ Regulations covering the organic sector have not kept up with the strong development of the sector and constituted one of the last areas of agricultural legislation which had not been brought up to date under the Lisbon Treaty to make use of Parliament’s full powers.
Marketing of organic seed and plant material will be properly recognised and information on availability of young organic animals or plant material will be provided for producers so that non-organic materials used to date can be phased out. Controls and checks will be improved and causes of contamination of organic produce will be systematically investigated and monitored by the Commission over four years, so that new solutions and legislative proposals can then be made to stop future incidents. These measures offer a more streamlined set of rules for producers and more certainty for consumers of organic food in Europe. That is why I voted in favour of the report.

Guidelines for the employment policies of the Member States (A8-0140/2018 - Miroslavs Mitrofanovs)

19-04-2018

. ‒ The employment guidelines define the common priorities and targets for Member States’ employment policies. Together with the broad economic policy guidelines, they form the basis of the European Semester and the country-specific recommendations. The revision of the employment guidelines introduced the principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights, with a special focus on equal opportunities, fair working conditions as well as social protection and inclusion for all citizens. The report calls for child poverty to be tackled by providing access to health care, education and childcare that are free of charge, as well as to decent housing and proper nutrition. That is why I gave my vote in favour.

Protection of investigative journalists in Europe: the case of Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová (B8-0186/2018)

19-04-2018

I have voted in favour of the resolution, which calls on Slovak authorities to deploy all necessary resources to ensure a full, thorough and independent investigation of the double murder, to bring the perpetrators to justice. The resolution calls for the protection of investigative journalists from any form of intimidation and defamation charges and from attempts aimed at silencing them

The violation of human rights and the rule of law in the case of two Greek soldiers arrested and detained in Turkey (B8-0194/2018, B8-0196/2018)

19-04-2018

Two Greek soldiers have been held in a Turkish prison for more than one month without charges being brought against them, leaving them unaware of the crime of which they are accused. The resolution calls on the Turkish authorities to swiftly conclude the judicial process and release the two Greek soldiers and return them to Greece. That is why I have voted in favour of this resolution

Implementation of the Treaty provisions concerning national Parliaments (A8-0127/2018 - Paulo Rangel)

19-04-2018

I have voted in favour of the report, which aims to assess the use of current mechanisms for National Parliaments (NPs) participation in the EU political process provided for in the treaties. Based on that assessment, the report may then looks into possible improvements to those mechanisms, in order to associate NPs more closely in the overall integration process. The report also examine the implementation thus far the political structured debate established between the EC and NPs.

Annual Report on Competition Policy (A8-0049/2018 - Ramon Tremosa i Balcells)

19-04-2018

I have voted in favour on the report, which highlights that adequate resources are needed both at the EU and national levels in order to properly carry out the tasks of various competition authorities, and it calls on the Commission to create guidelines to shorten the duration of antitrust investigations.

Vaccine hesitancy and drop in vaccination rates in Europe (B8-0188/2018, B8-0195/2018)

19-04-2018

I have voted in favour of the resolution, which states to improve the public information available on the need for vaccination. Vaccines save millions of people from illness and disability in the world, and in Europe, they have eradicated diseases, like polio, but they could come back if general immunisation was to be undermined. The increase of anti-vaccine movements and vaccine-shortages in some European countries poses a threat to the health of European citizens. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warns against the alarming return of preventable diseases, such as measles.

Implementation of the European Protection Order Directive (A8-0065/2018 - Soraya Post, Teresa Jiménez-Becerril Barrio)

19-04-2018

A well used EPO and EU accession to the Istanbul Convention are an integral part of a coherent EU legal framework for the protection of victims, which is essential. That is why I have voted in favour
