  • Pakistan won the cricket world cup in Ramadan. Think the rest of us can put some leaflets through doors and get to a polling station. ------- PRESS RELEASE: Amjad Bashir MEP: Moaning about an election in Ramadan is nonsense MEP Amjad Bashir has defended the Prime Minister after she was attacked by Labour and Scottish Nationalists for calling the forthcoming general election during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber dismissed the criticism as "nonsense". He spoke out following accusations from Muslim MPs including Labour's Rushanara Ali (Bethnal Green and Bow) and Yasmin Qureshi (Bolton South East) and Scotland's SNP Minister for Transport Humza Yousaf that Muslims had been ignored and would find it difficult to campaign or vote during Ramadan, when Muslims take no food or drink during daylight hours. Mr Bashir said: "As a Muslim myself, I have never heard such nonsense. "For a Muslim Ramadan is part of life, not a reason to put life on hold. Pakistan faced Australia in the cricket world cup final during Ramadan. They didn't complain or ask for it to be postponed - they went out and won it! "I think the rest of us can manage to push some leaflets through doors and get to a polling station. "It sounds to me as though Labour and the SNP are moaning and getting their excuses for failure in early. The truth is the public think their policies are chaotic and their leaders dangerous." The Muslim Council of Great Britain is also reported to have dismissed the criticism, saying: "Muslims fasting during Ramadan will go about their normal daily activities and taking time out to cast a vote will have no impact on their choice to do so."
