  • #Brexit If you just needed another example of how well some in the Leave campaign lived and thrived on invented facts... After promising EU money would immediately be sent back to the NHS, after claiming that Turkey and its 80 million citizens were about to join the EU and move en masse to the UK, after a newspaper claimed that the Her Majesty was in favour of Leave (just to mention a few examples), on social media, an invented quote attributed to me was taken up and was spread virally. It was a pure fake which was used and reused to reinforce the claim that the EU is antidemocratic. It is just very scary to see how some - albeit a small minority - among the Leavers accuse the EU of being an antidemocratic regime, whilst using propaganda techniques which can be found in past and present authoritarian models (“if you repeat a lie a thousand times, it becomes a fact”). We’ll need all our democratic vigilance and civic activism to ensure that any debate about the EU remains as informed and fact-based as possible. One can be pro or against the EU, but we should not allow opinions to be based on false claims. A responsible, pluralistic and competent press will also be needed to succeed in this. Thanks to Le Monde for reconstructing the dynamics of this (in French)
