  • Meet the music-loving Beluga Today is International Day for Biological Diversity and in honour of this day, I would like to introduce a new friend I met at the Oceanografic in Valencia last month on a Bureau meeting with the EPP Group in the European Parliament: the Beluga whale. This whale is found primarily in the icy coastal waters of the Arctic Ocean and is extremely vocal and can produce a series of chirps, clicks and squeals, earning it the nickname the “canary of the sea” (you can see we share an enthusiasm for music). This whale is not yet endangered, but if current trends continued, its existence in natural environments will be threatened. Biodiversity, on the land and under the sea, is key to our survival. Every individual organism plays an important role contributing to the balance of its ecosystem. Whales, such as the Beluga, are at the top of the food chain and are responsible for maintaining the overall health of the marine environment. Even the smallest loss of biodiversity can threaten the survival of such creatures and must be protected to prevent the extinction a species. The United Nations has proclaimed 22 May as International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness on biodiversity issues. Let’s celebrate biodiversity and its many wonders, including this music-loving Beluga.
